How to set my device’s APN

To use a Hologram SIM for data, set your device’s Access Point Name (APN) to hologram. The APN directs your connection through Hologram’s gateway.
1

Insert SIM and power on

With your device powered off, insert the Hologram SIM card into your device and power your device back on.
2

Configure the APN

Then, configure your device to use Hologram’s Access Point Name (APN) to load the proper configuration. Most devices set APNs via SMS, firmware, a web UI, or code. Check your device documentation for exact steps.

Hologram APN settings

  • APN: hologram
  • APN username: none
  • APN password: none
  • IP address: Dynamic (using DHCP)
  • Data roaming: Enabled
Your specific device might not ask for all of this information and no PIN is required.
Important: Setting the APN can vary drastically from device to device. These are generic guidelines, and it is best to reference your device’s documentation or contact your device manufacturer for more specific instructions.

Troubleshooting device APN configuration

If you have any issues, please refer to your device’s manual. In general, we see some regular methods for setting the APN:
  • USB modems and routers have their APN set via a web portal or an app that is pre-loaded into the device.
  • Micro Controller Units the APN is set via software or firmware.
  • GPS devices (asset trackers) need APN settings to be sent via SMS messages.
  • Phones and tablets are usually automatically set but can be manually set in the settings menu.

Does Hologram offer custom APNs?

Yes, custom APNs are available to contracted accounts. The hologram APN is already private, and typically this is of the time this is only done for a vanity APN to mask the hologram name from your customers.
Limited access: You can request a custom APN by contacting support.

Could a SIM require multiple APNs?

Some connectivity profiles on Hologram SIMs may require APNs other than the default hologram. Additionally, some Multi-Core SIMs may require different APNs per profile. If the enabled profile changes through Outage Protection or manual profile changes, the device’s APN may also need to change. In these cases, your device will need to be able to support automatic APN changes based on the enabled profile.
